Gillespie Park
Walking through Sarasota’s Gillespie Park neighborhood is nothing other than a charming journey filled with charismatic homes and a stunning park. Around the neighborhood you’ll find houses with all different kinds of styles; from Mediterranean, Spanish, & Italian influences, to small cottages, “Old Florida” homes, and modern or contemporary designs.
Located right next to downtown, Gillespie Park and its surroundings are a perfect oasis for anyone who has a creative side & cherishes the variety of things to do that comes with city life. Most of these homes were built between the 1920’s and 1940’s and have been remodeled or renovated.
Gillespie Park gets its name from John Hamilton Gillespie, the very first mayor of Sarasota. It originally was part of an experimental farm that ended up failing and was transformed into a golf course during the 1880s. Eventually, the real estate boom of the 1920’s in Sarasota caused the subdivision to become platted for residential use.

The city then created the recreational park in the center of the neighborhood, on 10 acres of luscious green land. In 1926, Gillespie Park even won an award in the National Playground Beautification Contest! Today, this park and its shimmering pond is home to many different species of wildlife and plants. It has a great selection of picnic spots, a tennis court, and of course, an updated playground for the kids.
