Legacy Trail
The Legacy Trail is a beautiful 12.5-mile-long walkway and bike path that began construction in 2004. In 2018, an extension that is currently under construction (likely until sometime in 2022) goes through the heart of Sarasota. The Legacy Trail begins in Venice at the historic train depot and runs along the old Seaboard Air Line Railway.
The first passenger coach traveled on the new railroad all the way back in 1911. Â The Venice Train Depot itself opened on March 27, 1927, and now remains as a place for historic information and tours. It is also used as a regional transportation hub for Sarasota County Area Transit and is the main starting point of the Legacy Trail.
During World War II, the railroad was used to transport goods and for servicemen traveling to the Army Air Base in Venice. From 1932 to 1942 the railroad was also used by patients going to Dr. Albee’s Florida Medical Center. The famous Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus also used the railroad to travel to Venice from 1960 to 1992.
Along the trail, they have added several bike repair stations, benches made of recycled plastic, and information boards that include a map of the trail. Whether you decide to have a brief stroll along the trail or a long bike ride, you’re sure to see different types of wildlife, plants, and other beautiful sights that are otherwise hard to find in busy southwest Florida.
