Palma Sola
Palma Sola is a small town just north of the Bradenton city limits. It was founded in 1884 by Warburton S. Warner, the son of James Warner. The Warner family was one of the first northerner families to homestead the area after the civil war in 1868. James Warner built their home not far from what is now called Warner’s Bayou.
The town of Palma Sola grew quickly and for a short time became one of the largest towns in Manatee County. It was home to a two-story hotel, general store, sawmill, and a fishing wharf. The main industries had been timber, fishing, and agriculture, until several fires destroyed a local icehouse, warehouses, and a portion of the wharf.
Walking down Riverview Boulevard and around Warner’s Bayou for the first time I could sense the amount of history that was there. Many of the homes are proof of this with an unmissable and charming “Old Florida” style of architecture from the 1920’s and 30’s.
