Sapphire Shores-Indian Beach

Located in very close proximity to the Ringling Museum, Sapphire Shores/Indian Beach is one of the finest neighborhoods in Sarasota. It’s also one of the largest and has a century of fascinating history. There’s a vast array of mansions, cottages, bungalows, and overall, just street after street filled with stunning architecture.

The photos here in this post were taken around the most northern part of Sapphire Shores/Indian Beach. Bay Shore Road stems out into five other streets that lead to beautiful Sapphire Shores Park. Here you can see some of the famed million dollar mansions wrapped around the Sarasota Bay.

John Ringling built the horseshoe-shaped boat basin in the 1920’s as a turning point for his yacht after he built his home Ca d’Zan. People often use Sapphire Shores Park as a place to relax and see any wildlife that may appear. I personally love to launch the kayaks here and see Ringling’s Ca d’Zan from the water!

The Sarasota School of Architecture has designed some homes in the area, of mainly modernist designs. Many of the others have the classic 1920’s Mediterranean Revival style, and some (such as the Thomas House) have even landed on the National Register of Historic Places. Simply just driving through this neighborhood overwhelms you with the beauty of the canopying trees and truly amazing works of architecture.

The city then created the recreational park in the center of the neighborhood, on 10 acres of luscious green land. In 1926, Gillespie Park even won an award in the National Playground Beautification Contest! Today, this park and its shimmering pond is home to many different species of wildlife and plants. It has a great selection of picnic spots, a tennis court, and of course, an updated playground for the kids.
